About the paper
Paper P1, Professional Accountant, is a new compulsory paper in the Essentials module at the Professional level of the ACCA Qualification. The syllabus covers a set of issues, knowledge of which is required to understand how accounting in a business context contributes to, and is underpinned by, governance and ethics. These are divided into the sections of the syllabus, which are as follows.

The corporate governance section: this section discusses many recent governance failures and the reasons for these as well as the correct procedures to be followed.

The ethics section: this section highlights the importance of the ethical assumptions that surround any profession and system of governance. It also examines the ethical frameworks that inform practice and guide practitioners.

Internal controls and risks sections: these sections discuss risks and internal control systems from the perspective of the board.
